Tawnie Olson’s new marimba solo

My good friend Tawnie Olson just wrote a beautiful guest blog post over at the Janus Trio website, part of their Mouth-Piece series.

Tawnie and I met back while I was at Yale, I was playing one of the percussion parts in her thesis composition. Shortly after, I asked her to write a piece for the Wanmu percussion trio and she wrote As Rain Hollows Stone.

Ever since then, I’ve been begging her to write me a marimba solo, and she’s finally doing it! The piece will be called No two blackbirds, and it’s a unique take on birdsong. I premiered the first movement back in September in San Diego, check that out here. The world premiere will be at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. on March 23rd.

Here’s the blog post – check it out.
